Andrea Jiapei Li is a New York-based womenswear designer, fresh out of Parsons – The New School of Design. We first caught Jiapei Li at VFILES Runway in New York back in 2016, where she won, amongst other up-and-coming designers. Since then, the designer has established herself as a maverick of the New York design scene, noted in Vogue US, Vogue China, I-D, and Dazed, among others. Andrea Jiapei Li designs for the grown up tomboy – one who is sporty and modern, while simultaneously elegant.
With every collection, Andrea Jiapei Li also taps into an experience or identity, making her one of our favorite storytellers. For her AW17 collection pictured, the designer drew inspiration from the world of science fiction, telling the story of self-discovery experienced by linguist Louise Banks, played by Amy Adams in the film “Arrival,” as she communicates with aliens to save humanity. Andrea Jiapei Li managed to communicate this through her evolution of fabric techniques and silhouettes. The oversized outerwear presented in the collection were made to symbolize protection, before a dramatic shift is made to effortless off-the-shoulder pieces and asymmetrical silhouettes, mirroring the character’s acceptance and growth into her identity. The intricate creative process behind Jiapei Li’s work continues to push her to the forefront of the international fashion stage, and we cannot wait to see what is yet to come from the young designer.
